Hurricane Lorenzo is now within striking distance of the west coast of Ireland, raising the possibility of catastrophic consequences for the country.
Lorenzo will slam headlong into the western and southern coasts 24h from now, causing severe swells and lashing the coast with mighty winds of over 100km/h.
The key consideration now is whether Lorenzo just skirts off along the coast or makes landfall, in which case the consequences for Ireland could be dire.
