Lowering the voting age to 16 is ‘worth discussing’, says Minister of Education

According to Norma Foley, the minister of education, lowering the voting age to 16 is a “discussion worth having,” reports Breaking News.

According to Ms. Foley, she would explore lowering the voting age from 18 in order to “empower” young people.

Speaking to reporters in Dublin, Ms Foley said: “I think it’s a discussion worth having. For example, I know a number of years ago it was suggested that perhaps you would begin with the local elections and then move forward or whatever,” reports Breaking News.

She added: “I think it’s no harm in having discussions around how we can empower young people,” reports Breaking News.

When asked how she would defend allowing 16-year-olds to have a say in national politics given that they are not allowed to buy smokes or alcohol, Ms Foley said that the discussion of youth empowerment does not “rest and fall with the vote.”
