After receiving enough support from Democratic delegates to open the door for her to receive the nomination, US Vice President Kamala Harris will make her first appearance as a presidential contender in the crucial battleground state of Wisconsin, reports RTE.

President Joe Biden, 81, withdrew from his re-election campaign on Sunday following weeks of pressure from members of his own party to drop out, raising doubts about his capacity to defeat former President Donald Trump or serve a fourth four-year term. Ms. Harris has now emerged as the Democratic candidate.

The campaign stated that Ms. Harris won the nomination yesterday night with the promised backing of the majority of the party’s delegates, who will decide the nomination, less than 36 hours after Mr. Biden’s endorsement.

“I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee,” Ms Harris said in a statement. “I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon,” reports RTE.

The Associated Press conducted an unofficial poll of delegates and found that Ms. Harris had more over 2,500 of them, far more than the 1,976 required to win a vote in the next weeks.

Though no one else cast a vote in the AP survey, delegates might still theoretically alter their minds; 54 delegates stated they were unsure, reports RTE.

A lot of people were dissatisfied with their alternatives in this race, but Ms. Harris’s ascent drastically changes the outcome.

In the competitive states that are likely to decide the election, like Wisconsin and the sun-belt states of Arizona and Nevada, Mr. Biden had been falling behind Mr. Trump in opinion polls due to factors like his age and the ongoing high costs that are straining American household finances.

Ms. Harris, the first Asian-American and Black woman to hold the office of vice president, has another chance to restart the Democratic campaign when she is in Wisconsin, reports RTE.

At 1:00 PM local time (7 PM Irish time), she is expected to give a speech at a political gathering in Milwaukee.

The 59-year-old Ms. Harris gave a preview of her strategy for taking on Mr. Trump yesterday by bringing up her experience going after “predators” and “fraudsters” while serving as attorney general of California and district attorney of San Francisco.

“So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type,” she said in reference to her opponent, a convicted criminal who was found guilty of sexual assault in a civil suit, reports RTE.
