After receiving the bowl of shamrock, US President Donald Trump celebrated “the long and unique friendship between Americans and the Irish,” reports Breaking News.

“I adore Irish people,” Trump declared. Over the years, I’ve made some very wonderful friends, I adore Irish people, and I’ve travelled to Ireland a lot, reports Breaking News.

A long-standing emblem of the relationship between the United States and Ireland is the shamrock’s gift to the White House. This custom began in 1953 when US President Dwight D. Eisenhower was first shown a bowl of shamrock by Ambassador John Joseph Hearne, who served as Ireland’s ambassador to the US from 1950 to 1960.

Through succeeding governments, the ritual has persisted every year since. The shamrock for this year’s event was donated by Living Shamrock, a Ballinskelligs, County Kerry-based business, reports Breaking News.

With the necessary phytosanitary certificates, the fresh shamrock was cultivated and harvested for export.

The House of Waterford, a division of the Fiskars Group, which is renowned for producing exquisite Irish crystal, made the crystal bowl that was given to President Trump, reports Breaking News.
