President Michael D Higgins has announced his intentions to run for a second term in office.
President Higgins who was speaking in Co Mayo on Tuesday, confirmed his decision by stating that he has carefully considered his position and that given he met the demands of the office, he has decided to run for the position once again.
In a brief statement President Higgins said the following: “He would be offering himself for the position.”
Before adding: “The Government has been informed.”
If re-elected President Higgins would aged 85 when his next term ends.
The presidents current age has drawn some criticism from some political figures including Senator David Norris who recently questioned the President’s motives for running for a second term given his age.
