‘Idea of mixing’ migrant accommodation ‘has validity’, Tánaiste Micheál Martin claims

The idea of “mixing” refugee and asylum seeker housing rather than “male only” camps “has validity,” according to Tánaiste Micheál Martin, reports The Mirror.

The Fianna Fáil leader, who was speaking in Cork, also voiced alarm about the “dangerous phenomenon” of arson assaults on centres intended to house asylum seekers.

It comes after more demonstrations in recent weeks at sites designated for asylum seekers.

Protesters and Gardaí battled in Roscrea, County Tipperary, when the first set of International Protection Applicants entered the Racket Hall Hotel. Up to 160 asylum seekers are anticipated to relocate into the building.

“Many young migrants fleeing Africa or the Middle East or elsewhere tend to come in single, although you also have unaccompanied minors, you also have families,” Mr Martin explained, reports The Mirror.

“I think the idea of mixing has validity. I think that’s what you’ll begin to see. I think we have to be careful of language around vetting and unvetting because vetting in itself is fairly preliminary in any event,” he added, reports The Mirror.

“I think what’s important is that we can reassure communities in respect of making sure that any community of asylum seekers, that services are there, that there is proper communication with the communities and full transparency,” he continued, reports The Mirror.
