“If they can do it for them, why can’t they do it for the homeless Irish?” – Mixed reaction to government trying to fast track planning to build houses quickly for Ukrainians

Many people on social media are asking how the government can do everything that they’re doing and planning on doing to house up to 200,000 Ukrainians due to arrive into Ireland over the coming weeks and months.

People are querying just how all this activity can be achieved so swiftly for people who aren’t even Irish citizens, yet there appears to be little or nothing at all done for circa 10,000 Irish homeless sleeping rough around the country.

The government has undertaken a number of meetings to try and decide what’s the best move forward to ensure that there’s enough properties to house the Ukrainians due to come into Ireland in the coming weeks and months.

At present, some 20,000 Ukrainians have already arrived into Ireland with thousands more expected very soon.

It’s understood that the Housing Minister has looked at options that would include fast-tracking planning permission along with looking at vacant properties around the country.

It’s believed that the government’s ideal plan would be to give all Ukrainians eventually a turn-key house.
