“I’m going nowhere” – Varadkar completely dismisses early election rumours

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar insisted that “at least more election” in stressing that there were no plans for an early general election.

The next general election is scheduled to be held in March 2025 at the latest.

However, speculations are growing that the country may hold elections earlier than expected.

Many people in Fine Gael told the Irish Mirror that they believed a general election would be held in November 2024 after the coalition’s final budget.

Some have predicted that the current Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael/Green Party government might have polled better if the election had been held immediately after the Liberal Budget.

However, the Taoiseach told reporters at Cork’s Fota Wildlife Park that there were no plans to hold an early election.

“There’s no consideration or no talk at the moment among the party leaders or in government about the election. I understand it’s something that people are very interested in. It’s absolutely not our focus. Our focus is helping people with the cost of living and the budget coming up soon. It’s making more progress on housing, it’s health reform. It’s making sure children have a better start in life. It’s building safer, stronger communities. The next elections people are going to vote in Ireland will be local in European elections, not a general election,” he said, reports The Mirror.

The local and European elections are scheduled to take place in June of this year.

“I’m 44 so I have at least one more election in me, if not two” the Taoiseach said, reports The Mirror.
