I’m sorry: Leo Varadkar apologises over shameful University Hospital Waterford comments

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has issued an apology to everyone who thought he didn’t take the matters raised at University Hospital Waterford seriously.

In a statement released today, Mr Varadkar said that he apologises for his original remarks he made last week about the situation.

The Taoiseach, also said that he has received corroborating statements about the matter since his initial remarks.

Mr Varadkar recieved strong criticism after he stated he didn’t know whether claims of decomposing bodies being left on trolleys at the hospital’s mortuary were true, untrue or greatly exaggerated.

He also described the story as a strange story as there was no evidence to support the claims.

However today the Taoiseach has said that he has received further information about the claims that support the original story.

He said that he didn’t want to jump to conclusions when the original claims were made because he didn’t know whether they were true or not.

However since the further information has come to light, the Taoiseach said that he wanted to apologise unreservedly to anyone who feels that I did not treat this issue with the seriousness or sensitivity it deserved.

Mr Varadkar added that planning permission has been granted for a new mortuary to be put in place at the hospital and in the mean time a number of temporary measures will be put in place.
