Increase of 184% in asylum seekers into Ireland in January – Majority from Somalia, Nigeria and Georgia, Algeria and Afghanistan

According to the official government run International Protection Office who process asylum seekers coming into Ireland, there has been almost a trebling of asylum seekers in comparison to the same time last year.

The majority of asylum seekers were from Somalia (18.9%), Nigeria (18.4%), Georgia (12.5%), Algeria (7.4%) Afghanistan (6.1%)

A total of 392 asylum seekers entered Ireland in January 2022. A 182% increase over January 2022 after relocation applicants (1) is excluded from the statistics .

The Green Party wish to give all new asylum seekers own door homes and full healthcare and unemployment benefits from the moment they land in Ireland.

The International Protection Office in Ireland does not give a demographic breakdown of asylum seekers so it’s unsure how many men, women or children arrived into Ireland.

It is also unclear how many, if any asylum seekers were refused entry at our borders or repatriated by our border control centres in our Airports.
