An 86 year old grandmother has become the latest victim of India’s rape crisis following a brutal assault in Delhi, the BBC reports.
The elderly woman was waiting for the milkman outside her home when a man in his 30s approached her. He said he could take her to get milk, leading her away where he savagely assaulted and raped her. Locals responded to the woman’s cries and the man was handed over to police. The victim was left injured and with ‘extreme trauma’ by the horrific crime.
In 2018 India was named the world’s most dangerous place for women for its enormous rates of rape and sexual abuse. Police recorded nearly 34,000 cases of rape that year, translating to one occuring every 15 minutes. One in every four victims is a minor, and experts say the actual figure is likely far higher due to crimes not being reported.
