An investigation is currently being conducted in Mountjoy Prison, after a prisoner tried to stab a psychologist in the neck with a sharpened piece of steel.

Gardai say that the horrific attack happened during a consultation between the inmate and a visiting doctor. It is understood that two psychologists from the Central Mental Hospital were paying a visit to the 22-year-old inmate on Thursday afternoon in the High Support Unit when the attack occurred.

It is believed that during the doctors’ consultation the prisoner produced a weapon and then proceeded to attack the male doctor. The doctor then grappled with the prisoner and somehow managed to escape with just a graze on his neck. Staff at the Prison quickly rushed to the scene and wrestled the makeshift weapon off him.

A spokesman for the prison has confirmed that the incident took place and he has praised the actions of the staff who quickly responded to the incident.

The spokesman also confirmed that the matter is currently being investigated by both the Irish Prison Service and the Gardai.
