The incident took place on a red line Luas tram on Thursday evening. When the tram reached the Smithfield stop, a gang of youths caused a disturbance onboard.

For reasons unknown, they targeted one of the passengers, 40-year-old Noel O’Rourke, who was returning home from a concert. The youths beat him over the head with a bottle in a totally unprovoked attack. He was hit several times and left with a fractured eye socket. He also needed staples in his head after the violent incident.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries, and was discharged on Friday evening.

Gardai are investigating the horrific assault, and recommend that Luas passengers are extra vigilant due to this and others serious incidents that have taken place on the trams.
