Sinn Fein call for an independent inquiry into care home standards

Sinn Fein are calling on the Government to carry out an independent inquiry into the standard of care provided at care homes across the country.

Party president Gerry Adams has stressed that people with intellectual disabilities must be protected by the State.

The move comes in the wake of a damning report published by the health watchdog HIQA detailing its findings on the Redwood Extended Care Centre in Co Meath.

The report lists a high number of physical “interventions” and restrictive measures taken by the staff on a routine basis.

Mr. Adams added that he raised the issue of concerns about the facility on July last, with the then Health Minister James Reilly.

He also said that Sinn Féin will continue raising the issue in the Dáil until he is satisfied that measures are taken by the Government to address these concerns.
