Invasion of the killer ladybirds: Deadly Harlequin species breeding in their numbers across Northern Ireland

A killer ladybird species has been detected breeding across Northern Ireland in great numbers, and there are now fears that a large ladybird army may be gearing to make its way across the border to terrorize local species.

The Irish Wildlife Trust has stated that Harmonia axyridis succinea, commonly known as the Harlequin ladybird, are an invasive breed, with an insatiable appetite for other ladybird species. But if they feel peckish, Harlequins will also readily consume the eggs of butterflies and moths.

Harleqins began their long journey west somewhere in eastern Asia, and reportedly first arrived in the UK in the summer of 2004. Harmonia rapidly spread to most areas in England and some locations in Scotland.

The voracious Harlequins were first spotted on Irish soil in County Down in 2009. Soon, there were sightings throughout County Cork and Wicklow.
