There have been at least six fatal shootings at a Croatian assisted living facility, reports RTE.

Police in Daruvar, eastern Croatia, said a shooter entered a private nursing home and went on a shooting rampage, leaving five patients and one employee dead.

According to state television HRT, an unidentified shooter entered a Daruvar elderly home, located around 130 kilometres east of Zagreb, and started firing.

The incident was reported to the police at 10.10 a.m. local time (9.10 a.m. Irish time), and they verified the suspect had entered the assisted living facility and made use of a pistol, reports RTE.

Police released a statement saying, “The person linked to the perpetration of the crime is under police custody.”

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic later acknowledged the death toll and demanded that pertinent authorities conduct a comprehensive inquiry.

Four people were discovered dead at the scene by medical responders, and four more injured, who were sent right away to nearby hospitals, according to Nenad Mrzlecki, the director of a regional emergency care centre, who spoke with local media.

Regarding the fifth victim, Mr. Mrzlecki withheld information, reports RTE.

“Our teams are still on the ground and the priority is to provide everyone with the necessary help, after that is done we will know the exact data on the number of victims,” he stated.

The suspected gunman was identified by the Croatian daily Jutarnji list as a “retired military police officer” who killed his mother in addition to other residents and staff members, reports RTE.
