Investigation continues after four die after tourist boat capsizes in northern Italy

Four people, including two foreigners, died when a boat carrying tourists capsized on Lake Maggiore, Italy in strong winds, reports RTE.

The boat sank from Lisanza at the southern end of the lake in northern Italy last night after the weather suddenly changed.

“The bodies of four people have been recovered,” fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari told AFP.

A middle-aged Israeli man was among the victims, according to a statement by the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

Two of the other victims – a man and a woman – were Italian and the fourth was a Russian woman, local website Varese News said.

Lombardy Region President Attilio Fontana said the 16-meter-long boat was knocked over by a “whirlwind” on Sunday, reports RTE.

According to the fire department, 19 people survived the crash. According to media reports, some were picked up by passing boats while others swam ashore.

According to reports, the boat was with Italian and foreign tourists on board and quickly sank.

Video by firefighters showed a search and rescue helicopter flying over choppy water where chairs and other debris were floating, reports RTE.

Located on the south side of the Alps, Lake Maggiore is Italy’s second largest lake and a popular tourist destination.
