At least 77 migrants drowned when a boat they were about to board in Lebanon capsized off the Syrian coast, the Syrian health minister said.

It is one of the worst shipwrecks in the eastern Mediterranean.

Lebanon, which has been mired in a financial crisis since 2019 described by the World Bank as one of the worst in modern times, has become a launching pad for illegal migration, with its own citizens joining the Syrian refugees and the Palestinians leaving their own countries.

Around 150 people, mostly Lebanese and Syrians, were on board the small boat that sank off the Syrian city of Tartus.
