Investigation underway after fire ruins former school in Cork earmarked for migrants

Tánaiste Michael Martin described the arson attack on the former gaelscoil in Cork, which is undergoing renovation to accommodate Ukrainian refugees, as “absolutely unacceptable”, reports RTE.

Gardaí are investigating an incident where three men wearing balaclavas dropped a petrol bomb and broke windows at Gaelscoil We Riordaine in Ballincollig.

The building stood with minimal damage. The building is empty for more than a decade

The incident happened yesterday morning.

The Gardai were alerted and arrived on the scene with two units of the Cork City Fire Brigade. Several small fires were quickly put out, reports RTE.

Speaking in Cork yesterday, Mr Martin said: “Anybody who commits crime or arson, the full rigours of the law should be applied,” reports RTE.

He said there are many more positive stories about how society and communities in Ireland have responded to the plight of Ukrainian refugees.

“I witness it up and down the country as I go to various communities. [But] there is an element on the far right who are stoking up unacceptable racist rhetoric and making very false accusations against people, not just in terms of the context of Ukraine but also in the context of those seeking asylum in this country, young males in particular,” he said, reports RTE.
