A suspected heroin overdose has claimed the life of a prisoner at Midlands Prison in County Laois, reports RTE.
The inmate is said to have been in his 30s.
The Irish Prison Service acknowledged the death occurred earlier today in a statement.
“As with all death in custody, the Irish Prison Service, the Office of the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda SÃochána investigate where circumstances warrant,” stated the IPS, reports RTE.
It further said that the Coroner’s Office will decide the cause of death.
With a capacity of 870, Midlands Prison is a closed, medium-security facility for adult males, reports RTE.
