The Department of Transport is looking into claims that aircraft passing through Irish airspace carried armaments intended for Israel, reports Breaking News.
According to the Ditch news website, four US planes carrying munitions for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) passed across Irish airspace.
The Department is looking into it, according to a spokesman, although no such petitions or exemptions have been approved this year or last.
According to the Department, civil planes are not allowed to transport weapons into Irish sovereign territory or airspace unless the government grants a specific exception, reports Breaking News.
According to the spokeswoman, the Department is “engaging with the carrier concerned” and is aware of media reports.
According to Taoiseach Simon Harris, any such flight would need to follow “clear consent protocols.” He also stated that he has been informed time and time again that no requests have been made to deliver weapons to Israel over Irish airspace.
According to The Ditch, the planes were carrying explosive charges, tear gas primers, detonating fuses and gunfire primers, reports Breaking News.
“Now that the facts are established, it is very important,” Mr. Harris stated in a Tuesday speech.
“The Department of Transport has confirmed today that it is now engaging with the carrier. Once those facts are established, of course it could be for the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Defence to provide a further update on this and I’ll certainly be keeping in contact with both of them,” reports Breaking News.
