Ireland could see millions more people with rights to settle here as Ukraine and Moldova granted EU candidacy status

The European Union have granted Ukraine and Moldova candidate status for membership of the bloc despite serious concerns about the two countries meeting criteria around issues such as democratic rights, corruption and territorial disputes.

Ukraine is currently embroiled in a war with Russia with 20% of the country now in the hands of the Kremlin while Moldova has its own breakaway region of Transnistria with a majority Russian population and the presence of Russian peacekeeping troops.

There are also serious concerns regarding the democratic rights of citizens in these countries with the Zelensky regime in Kiev permanently banning the country’s largest opposition party just last week.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has also suggested he is in favour of removing the unanimous vote of member states required for the accession of new state to the EU.

If these two countries were be granted membership of the EU, almost 50 million more people from two of the poorest and most corrupt countries in Europe would have free access to settle in Ireland permanently.
