Ireland facing “exodus” of young teachers due to housing crisis as gov appear to prioritize housing refugees and migrants

The Irish National Teachers’ Organization (INTO) president Joe McKeown has warned that the current housing crisis will prompt an exodus of young Irish teachers, who will be forced to emigrate.

According to the Irish Independent, Mr. McKeown stated that newly qualified teachers cannot reasonably be expected to afford a mortgage in most of Ireland.

House prices continue to soar across the country with the government now prioritizing housing migrants and refugees while Irish people languish on seemingly never-ending social housing lists.

However, the shortage of houses and the government acquisition of properties for refugees coupled with the rising cost of living and inflation means young Irish people looking to buy their own home are facing a practically insurmountable tasks in many parts of the country.

The Independent reported that an address to INTO, union President Joe McKeown said:

“Unless we address this critical issue, we will see another exodus of our young and talented teachers,”

He went on to postulate:
“Who will teach our children then?”

“Having a roof over your head is a fundamental right for all citizens in a republic. Owning the roof over your head should not be an impossible dream for the vast majority of citizens,” he said.
