Ireland into Rugby World Cup quarter finals after hard win over Italy

Ireland have reached the quarter final of the Rugby World Cup this evening after a hard fought win over Italy in the Olympic Stadium in London.

The boys in green won the game 16-9, Ireland started the game brightly and went a head through the boot of Johnny Sexton but were quickly pegged back when Italy levelled through a penalty of their own. The game was largely stalemate but Ireland pulled ahead when Sexton slotted over a further penalty before the man of the moment Keith Earls scored the games only try to put Ireland 10-6 going into the break. Italy started the second half the stronger and pulled the score back through further penalties from Allan. However Ireland managed to hang on and hold out for the win.

The win now sends Ireland into the quarter finals along with France, with the team facing off for top spot in the pool next weekend.
