Ireland’s Cost-of-Living Bomb: Electricity Bills Set to Rise Another 10-15% in 2026 as Green Levies Pile On

Irish households are bracing for yet another brutal hit in 2026. Major suppliers have already signalled price increases of 10-15% from January/February, following the 12% Energia hike and 9.5% SSE Airtricity rise late last year. Average annual bills are now hovering around €1,800–€1,900, €400+ above the EU norm, with no winter electricity credits this time around.

The pain comes from multiple fronts: the carbon tax jumped to €71 per tonne in October 2025 and will climb again, adding roughly €17–€20 to gas bills and more to electricity through PSO and network levies. The Better Energy Levy, funding retrofits and renewables, is baked into every unit consumed. Meanwhile, EirGrid warns of ongoing grid constraints as data centres devour 21% of power, driving up system costs passed straight to consumers.

Families in poorly insulated homes face the worst: heat pumps remain unaffordable for most (€12k–€18k install), grants cover only half, and they often underperform in Irish conditions. Rural oil users stare at another 2.5c/litre diesel rise from January.

X is flooded with screenshots of eye-watering bills and cries of “tax upon tax.” This isn’t climate action—it’s class warfare on working people. Demand a freeze on levies, real winter supports, and an honest debate on nuclear before more households are forced to choose between heat and food.
