Latest figures show that 17,000 people are now homeless across Ireland

The number of people experiencing homelessness has hit a new all-time high, with 16,996 individuals using emergency accommodation during November, reports RTE.

According to the monthly homelessness report from the Department of Housing, 11,675 adults and 5,321 children made use of emergency accommodation in November.

This represents an increase of 200 from October, when the total stood at 16,766 people accessing emergency accommodation, reports RTE.

The number of children who are homeless increased by 47 compared to October.

The most recent increase occurs just before a cold weather period expected this weekend, reports RTE.

The November figures represent the 11th consecutive month of record highs, even though historical trends usually indicate a small decrease in December.

The new evidence of strain on homelessness services arrives in advance of a weekend when the whole Republic of Ireland faces weather alerts for snow, ice, and below-freezing temperatures, reports RTE.

Focus Ireland stated that the new record demonstrates the Government’s latest housing strategy “must start to deliver in 2026”.

Focus Ireland’s head of media communications, Roughan Mac Namara, called the situation “heartbreaking”, pointing out that 5,321 children have begun the new year without a home – many of them for the second or third time in emergency accommodation, reports RTE.

He said: “Children who are homeless are having their childhoods stolen one day at a time. This is wrong and we can – and must – end this human crisis.”

Mr Mac Namara added: “We need to see urgent action such as steps to fast-track delivery of more one- and four-bedroom homes to speed up exits from homelessness for families and individuals, alongside prioritising new social housing for those most in need.”, reports RTE.

Simon Communities of Ireland (SCI) Executive Director Ber Grogan stated he was deeply worried about the continued growth in homelessness numbers.

He said: “As we enter 2026, it is unacceptable that so many in Ireland are facing the year without a place to call home.

“These figures are a stark reminder that we must act urgently to provide support, affordable housing, and long-term solutions.

“The trauma of homelessness is profound and long-lasting, and affects education, health, and sense of security. Homelessness is preventable, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that no child, family, or individual is left without a place to call home.”, reports RTE.
