Ireland’s Euro 2020 hopes come down to the final game after Switzerland defeat

The Republic of Ireland must beat Denmark in their final game after they were beaten 2-0 by Switzerland in Geneva this evening.

Ireland who were once again second best were deservedly beaten as Switzerland got their qualification hopes back on track.

Mick McCarthy’s men who were looking for an improved performance following the dismal draw in Georgia, found themselves behind within sixteen minutes as Seferovic put the Swiss with a low strike from the edge of the box.

Although Ireland slightly improved, the lack of confidence on the ball clearly showed as they failed to threaten the Swiss defence.

Ireland were lucky not to be two down as the Swiss were awarded a penalty after Séamus Coleman was deemed to have handled the ball on the 75th minute.

Although Randolph managed to pull a superb save Ireland were truly chasing the game with 10 men and were punished in the 92 minute when Shane Duffy turned the ball into his own net whilst trying to clear an on target Swiss shot.

Ireland will now face a do or die match with Denmark on November 18th at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.
