The family of a 12-year-old Dublin girl who suffered a quadruple amputation after contracting strep A have paid tribute to their daughter.

Sophie Lanigan, from Blanchardstown, spent two weeks in intensive care after being admitted to hospital with a high fever last December, reports RTE.

Her family says she was then diagnosed with sepsis caused by Strep A. When she went into septic shock, her organs started failing.

Sophie was told by doctors that the damage to her hands and feet was irreversible and required an amputation.

She spent a further four weeks in intensive care.

Speaking to RTÉ News, Sophie’s father Keith Lanigan said: “We’re amazed at how determined and positive Sophie is,” reports RTE.

A fundraiser was organized on GoFundMe to raise money for the family.

“We need to adapt the house for Sophie’s needs,” Mr Lanigan said, reports RTE.

The 12-year-old was discharged from Children’s Health Ireland in Crumlin last Tuesday and is currently waiting in bed at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire.

Her father has praised everyone who has taken care of her so far.

“The staff in the hospital were amazing,” he said, reports RTE.
