Irish gov to the rescue as they pledge €10 MILLION a year to RTE for the next 5 years

It’s been the talk of the nation for the past couple of days, RTE has been given a much needed boost this week after the government confirmed that it has pledged some €50 MILLION in funding to the national broadcaster over the next five years.

The Minister for Communications revealed that the national broadcaster will be given €10m per year over the next five years in an effort to help the broadcaster who has committed to reduce costs by €60m over the next three years.

However the government has refused to pledge a long-term commitment to the broadcaster, but instead confirmed that a commission will be setup to examine the broadcaster and future funding.

The news comes as the RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes called on the Government to step up plans for a transition from a licence fee to a media fee.
