The Irish Government might he hit with a hefty bill to compensate prisoners who were forced to ‘slop out’ their cells.
Slopping out is a euphemism for manually emptying the toilet bucket.
The controversy arose after the Supreme Court awarded a prisoner housed at Mountjoy €7,500 in damages for having to ‘slop out’ over a number of months.
It is understood that there are currently 1,600 similar cases going through the courts. Similar outcomes for all these cases would result in a total bill of around €12m.
