Irish holidaymakers get warned that border agents can demand passwords and scroll through your phone

The United States continues to be a favourite travel destination for Irish people, with tens of thousands flying out each year to enjoy the bright lights of New York, the sunny beaches of Florida, and cultural cities such as Boston, reports The Mirror.

From city breaks and family vacations to summer stays on a J1 visa, America ranks highly for Irish tourists. However, a new advisory has been issued for those planning to travel stateside.

Irish travellers are being reminded to be aware of strict US immigration and entry protocols, including a lesser-known rule that allows border officers to legally inspect your phone, laptop, or tablet — without having to provide a reason. This can include requests for passwords and the ability to browse through personal content, reports The Mirror.,

Updated guidance from Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs states that refusing to comply with such requests may lead to denial of entry into the country.

These measures are part of broader security policies introduced in recent years and apply to all international visitors, reports The Mirror.

Beyond checking physical devices, US officials have also cautioned that they may assess a traveller’s social media presence when considering immigration decisions — particularly for those seeking student visas or permanent residency.

The DFA said: “The US authorities may search your electronic devices, such as your phones, computers or tablets, when you are entering the United States. They may request your passwords and they are not required to provide a reason for doing so. If you refuse, they may deny you entry to the United States. Furthermore, the US authorities have indicated that they may consider activity on social media when making decisions about your immigration status. The US authorities have indicated that this includes applicants for lawful permanent residence status and student visa holders,” reports The Mirror.
