On the 22nd June 2021, The Irish Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) who are responsible for licensing the Covid-19 vaccines published an important safety notice about serious adverse reactions from the Astra Zeneca Covid-19 vaccine now called VAXZEVRIA.
According to the HPRA and the Astra Zeneca safety notice:
“Very rare cases of capillary leak syndrome (CLS) have been reported in the
first days after vaccination with Vaxzevria. A history of CLS was apparent in
some of the cases. One fatal outcome has been reported”.
“Vaxzevria should not be used in individuals who have previously
experienced episodes of CLS. Intensive supportive therapy is usually warranted”.
According to the European Medical Agency (EMA) “Capillary leak syndrome is a rare, potentially life threatening condition that causes fluid leakage from small blood vessels (capillaries), resulting in swelling mainly in the arms and legs, low blood pressure, thickening of the blood and low blood levels of albumin (an important blood protein).
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Attacks” of systemic capillary leak syndrome are often preceded by one to two days of one or more nonspecific symptoms, advises the Mayo Clinic.
