LÉ Niamh has completed another humanitarian mission after rescuing 225 migrants off the Mediterranean sea.

139 men, 74 women and 12 children were taken from two inflatable vessels overnight and brought to safety.

The Mediterranean sea has become a regular, and often deadly, crossing point for migrants attempting to reach European shores.

More than 2,300 people have died this year so far while trying to make the perilous crossing, often in un-seaworthy craft.
