Irish passport reminder gets issued that could save your holiday as Minister issues urgent warning

It’s that time of year when individuals in Ireland are planning their summer vacation or getting ready to travel overseas for Easter. However, there is an important step you must do before you hasten to pack your luggage and purchase flights: Examine your passport, reports The Mirror.

Anyone planning a trip overseas in the upcoming months has received an urgent warning from Minister Neale Richmond. Irish nationals were advised by the Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora to verify the expiration date on their passports.

A regular adult passport renewal now takes 10 working days, but since summer travel is so hectic, it’s important to give yourself plenty of time to renew, reports The Mirror.

You may require a specific length of time remaining on your passport, depending on your destination. For instance, it is advised to have at least three months remaining after your return date if you are going from Ireland to Spain.

Minister Richmond underlined the value of preparation earlier this week when he visited the Balbriggan Passport Office, reports The Mirror.

He gave this reminder: “Many families will be travelling over Easter and during the summer. I encourage everyone planning their holidays, particularly those travelling with young children, to check their passports in plenty of time before their travel date.”

Over 1 million passports were granted by the Passport Service in 2024, and over 175,000 have already been processed this year. Interestingly, children accounted for 22% of them, reports The Mirror.

The ‘Don’t Be That Person’ campaign was recently launched by the Passport Service, which encourages people to apply well in advance of their travel dates and to verify the expiration dates of their passports.

Minister Richmond gave the following advice: “When renewing your passport, always do so with Passport Online for the fastest turnaround as it is the quickest, easiest and least expensive way for citizens at home and abroad to apply for their passports,” reports The Mirror.

Through the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Passport Online service, citizens can begin renewing their passports before they expire. The precise passport requirements for the nation you are visiting may also be found here, reports The Mirror.

The DFA reports that the majority of passport applications entail the following five steps:

  • Received application: Your online application for a passport has been received. Until you mail the necessary supporting documentation to us, we are unable to handle it.
  • Alert: Your application has been received. To continue with the application, you need to send in your supporting documentation.
  • Application for processing: We’ve got your supporting documentation. We’re currently checking these papers.
  • Application processing: We are working on your application.
  • Printing: We are printing your passport book. All submitted papers will be sent back individually.
