Irish person remains in hospital after suspected botulism outbreak in Bordeaux

An Irish woman is receiving emergency help in France after a woman died in a suspected botulism outbreak in the city of Bordeaux, reports RTE.

The Irishman was one of 12 people, mostly tourists, who fell ill after eating sardines at a winery in Bordeaux.

The city hosted thousands of Irish fans over the weekend to watch Ireland beat Romania in the opening match of the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

In a statement, the Irish Embassy in France said it was “aware of a botulism outbreak linked to a wine bar in Bordeaux. We advise Irish citizens who ate in Tchin Tchin Wine Bar between September 4th and 10th to immediately consult a doctor if experiencing any symptoms,” reports RTE.

Meanwhile, the HSE has recommended that anyone who has eaten sardines at a winery since September and feels ill should seek urgent medical advice in an emergency room.

Botulism is a serious neurological disease usually caused by eating improperly preserved food.

The health authority’s DGS said last night that a restaurant in the city centre had stored sardines.

At the Pellegrini Hospital in Bordeaux, Dr. Benjamin Clouzau said the dead woman checked herself into a hospital near Paris after returning with her partner.

She returned home and died there. Her partner remains in intensive care, reports RTE.

A total of 12 people are still receiving emergency treatment, health officials said. Five used respiratory support.

Among them are citizens of the United States, Germany and Canada, reports RTE.

Doctors said the German, like the resident of Barcelona, Spain, had gone home for treatment.

They all ate at the restaurant between September 4 and 10, when there are usually large numbers of tourists in the southwestern city, which is famous for its wine and food.

The restaurant remains closed today and the owner has been ordered to refrain from eating homemade sardine dishes, while authorities have seized the remaining sardines for further testing.
