Irish tourists warned as Spanish taxi scam is catching holidaymakers out in Spain

Spain is one of the most popular vacation spots for Irish travellers, and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Ireland has been providing residents with up-to-date information and guidance as thousands of travellers are expected there in the upcoming months, reports The Mirror.

Although travellers are always urged to exercise common sense care and maintain their knowledge in order to guarantee a safe and pleasurable visit, Spain is generally regarded as a safe nation for both inhabitants and visitors.

It coincides with a warning about a “taxi scam” that has been defrauding some travellers. According to one expert, some cab drivers choose to take customers on longer routes in order to charge a higher rate.

Head of Points Guy UK, Nicky Kelvin, formerly of Express.co.uk: “A key scam to look out for is when you take a taxi or another car service in an unfamiliar destination. Drivers may take a much longer route to get to your destination in order to maximise the cost of your fare,” reports The Mirror.

Although using an established taxi company is usually preferable than falling for such a scam, he said that in certain European towns, these services may be less prevalent. To prevent getting charged too much, travellers should also confirm that the taximeter is operational.

There are also reports of pickpocketing and fraudulent ticket frauds being practiced in Spain. “When visiting another country and touring the sights, it’s important to stay vigilant when it comes to ticket scams,” Nicky explained, elaborating on the phoney ticket scam. When locals try to sell tickets for tourist sites, buses, trains, and other events, they frequently say the tickets are cheaper, reports The Mirror.
