A number of individuals have been taken into custody following disturbances at the site of the former Crown Paints plant in Coolock, Dublin, which is scheduled to be built for applicants seeking international protection, reports RTE.
Incapacitating spray has been used, and the Garda Public Order Unit has been called in.
This afternoon, a number of fires were started and equipment was set ablaze.
Attacks on fire service and garda officers resulted in the throwing of bricks. The workers who were scheduled to start refurbishing the space were taken out.
The “full rigours of the law” would be applied to anyone responsible for the disruptions, according to Justice Minister Helen McEntee, reports RTE.
According to Ms. McEntee, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has promised “that everything will be done to bring those responsible to justice” and she is “appalled” by what transpired.
Gardaà said they were rerouting traffic, including those surrounding Malahide Road, because they were attending to a “public order incident” at the location.
Social media footage shows a fire next to an excavator, trees, and people yelling obscenities at one other while wearing masks, reports RTE.
The Dublin Fire Brigade is on the way to the location.
Up to 500 individuals may be accommodated at this location, and the Department of Integration promised to actively include public and community leaders in the process.
The Department stated in a statement that “a provider attempted to begin work” at the location this morning and that it will likely take several weeks to complete. Protests at the entrance to this site have delayed work beginning on this site for several months,” according to the Department,” reports RTE.
