According to Taoiseach Simon Harris, every Irish soldier serving in the southern region of Lebanon is present and accounted for, reports Breaking News.
Following claims that two peacekeepers were injured and that Israeli troops opened fire on three UNIFIL posts, this information was released.
In the midst of increased fighting in the area, the Irish Defence Forces are assisting Unifil.
Israeli forces have “repeatedly hit” UN installations in the previous 24 hours, according to a statement from Unifil.
“This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Merkava tank fired its weapon toward an observation tower at Unifil’s headquarters in Naqoura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall. The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital,” they said, reports Breaking News.
They added: “We remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times. Unifil peacekeepers are present in south Lebanon to support a return to stability under Security Council mandate. Any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701. We are following up with the IDF on these matters,” reports Breaking News.
