The spawning of the grotesque utility that is Irish Water will go down in history as a crowning achievement of piousness and reverence for the government’s European puppet masters.

Gone from bad to worse and then lower again throughout its farcical and short-lived existence, it has emerged today that over 900,000 households that claimed the so-called “water conservation grant” will likely lose it this year, and have it replaced with some sort of ‘subsidy.’

The comments were made by Minister for Health Leo Varadkar, who said that “no decision has been made” on whether the payment will be made this year or not.

The future of Irish Water and water charges is very much in jeopardy after Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil raised the prospect of the abolition of both, and it is understood that thousands of people recently contacted the Irish Water call centre to cancel their payments in light of the uncertainty over the utility’s survival.
