If there’s one thing clear after the General Election’s outcome is that the long road to nowhere for Irish Water is soon to end in a blaze of penury.

Despite the claims from outgoing Taoiseach that people ‘should still pay their water bills’, the reality is that those who have paid will no longer do so, and those who wisely did not will have saved some hard-earned cash.

Brendan Ogle TD, from the Right2Water campaign, has said that 99 seating TDs no longer support water charges, and that Irish Water’s days are numbered.

Fianna Fáil have said that scrapping water charges and abolishing Irish Water is a ‘red line’ issue for them.

Mr. Ogle said: “TDs who oppose water charges – now that Fianna Fáil have listened to people on the doorsteps and come around to our way of thinking – is 99 TDs.

“The parties who support water charges are Fine Gael and the Labour party, and we see that they have a very small minority now.

“So, water charges I have no doubt are going to be abolished, we’ve had the biggest social movement in the history of the state.”
