A Dublin mother-of-three has been left with no choice but to move to Barcelona to undergo life-saving medical treatment after being diagnosed with an exceptionally rare form of cancer.

Sabrina O’Connor, aged 45, from Dún Laoghaire, received a Stage 4 Mucosal Melanoma diagnosis in February, a development that has left her family utterly heartbroken, reports The Mirror.

Speaking about the moment she received the unexpected news, she said: “This is an extremely rare type of cancer, and there is simply not enough research or time being put into prevention and treatment,” reports The Mirror.

With very few viable treatment options available to her at home, Sabrina was left with no option but to pursue experimental cell therapy overseas. “There was not much that could be done for me here, other than chemotherapy and radiation,” she said, reports The Mirror.

The steep costs associated with private medical care in Barcelona have placed a significant financial burden on the family, leading her son Oliver to launch a GoFundMe fundraising page to help cover the expenses.

Sabrina still has 24 weeks of treatment ahead of her, with a pivotal scan due to take place in June to assess how she is responding, reports The Mirror.

The wider local community has come together in a remarkable show of solidarity, with schools, gyms and volunteers all organising fundraising events in support of Sabrina’s battle to survive.
