A number of prochoice campaigners travelled to Belfast today by train, collecting abortion pills which are illegal on both sides of the border.
The group, which included TDs Ruth Coppinger, Richard Boyd Barrett and Joe Higgins, brought back the pills to Heuston Station, where some campaigners took them to prove their insistence that abortion should be legal in Ireland.
“I’m not dead yet”, joked Ruth Coppinger as she took a tablet, washing it down with a bottle of water.
Caroline Simons of the Pro Life Campaign said that the event was a publicity stunt, commenting ‘The reality is that this group has no regard for the humanity of the unborn child and has no interest in drawing attention to the fact that abortion has significant negative mental health consequences for many women.’
