A 20-yr-old gay man who said that he was assaulted by a group of eight masked men in the entrance to his home now says that he lied to hide the truth from his partner.

The pieces of the puzzle did not fit. Surveillance cameras controlled by the neighbourhood police did not record anything to confirm the story proposed by the alleged victim: that he was assaulted by eight people in masks at the entrance of his building on Sunday in central Madrid, in the district of Malasaña. He also claimed to have been insulted by homophobic slurs before engraving the word “maricon” on his buttocks before leaving.

Local residents interviewed by police said they had not seen or heard anything despite the alleged attack which allegedly took place in broad daylight. The owner of a store where the victim was found also did not recall seeing her. There was not a single witness to the alleged crime.

Investigators at the police station where the 20-year-old reported and officials from the Provincial Information Command in Madrid were unable to verify his account of the events. On Wednesday, the man changed his story in a calm interview. According to El Pais, “It was consensual, in the house of another person with whom I had a sexual relationship,” he confessed to the police. He explained that he had lied in order to keep the truth from his current partner.
