It’s now looking very likely that Irish people will be asked to open their doors to let Ukrainian refugees live in their homes for up to 3 years, possibly longer.
It’s understood that many people have already offered their spare room to house refugees fleeing the Ukraine for as long as they require it.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said that up to 20,000 refugees fleeing the crisis in Ukraine could be housed in Ireland and that families may be asked to open their homes to them.
The Cabinet has been told that the initial figure could be as high as 6,000.
Coveney said that talks were taking place at the European level in Brussels on Tuesday morning on whether or not to expel staff or diplomats from Russian embassies.
The refugees could live in the European Union for up to 3 years and would be living effectively as EU citizens.
Coveney said that the State couldn’t accommodate everyone and that Irish families may be asked to open their doors to the refugees.
