“It’s impossible” – Taxi driver says social distancing in cab is next to impossible

A Dublin taxi driver has told The Liberal that it’ll be next to impossible to do any sort of safe social distancing in his job.

The man did not want to identified for fear of losing future business but who’s first name is Stephen, said that many people do not realise just how far away 2 metres is.

“I’m 5ft 9 or 175cm in height. People think two metres is 6ft, it’s not, it’s 6ft 6 which is a considerable difference”.

“There is literally no way I can drive my taxi in the front seat and have a passenger close to 7ft sitting behind me. You’d need a limo for that otherwise they’re going to be realistically 1 metre or around 3 feet 3 inches away from me in the very best case scenario”.

The concerned driver said that he literally has no idea how taxi’s will be able to ferry people around safely:

“It’s like this. I’d be willing to wear PPE to work but would people be willing to get into a taxi after someone else who possible coughed or sneezed in my car and I couldn’t clean it properly? It’s going to be impossible for that to happen and next to impossible for people to take taxi’s safely with proper social distancing. I really don’t think Simon Harris or Leo Varadkar know what they’re doing or talking about and I can’t see my car being back on the roads again properly any time soon”.
