Taoiseach Enda Kenny has removed James Reilly from his position as Deputy Leader of the party, in a move meant as a draconian ‘warning shot to Fine Gael dissidents,’ implying that this is the fate of those who do not toe the official party line.
The Taoiseach announced yesterday that Mr. Reilly was no longer Deputy Leader, and that he will be replaced.
It is believed that Reilly’s sacking is due to his views on the Eight Amendment. Last year, he called for a referendum to repeal the amendment.
Mr. Reilly lost his seat in the last election, and had been given a cushy seat in the Seanad as a consolation price.
