Japan’s Supreme Court has unanimously upheld a law requiring that trans-people be sterilised prior to officially changing their gender.

The law states that before trans-people can officially identify as the opposite sex to their actual biological sex, they must have their reproductive organs removed.

The country’s Supreme Court ruled that the law is constitutional because it was meant to reduce confusion in families and society.

Despite the unanimous ruling two the Supreme Justices did acknowledge that the law may be out of step with changing social attitudes.

Many in Japan’s LGBTTQQIAAP community still feel the need to hide their sexuality and gender dysphoria for fear of negative repercussions from their families or in their public life.
