A father and son have been handed down hefty fines and jail time after killing a female black bear and its two cubs in Alaska.
The man, named as 41-year-old Andrew Renner, shot the adult bear twice as she slept with her offspring. Then, they shot the cubs dead.
Unbeknownst to Renner, the killing was caught on video, as the bear in question was being monitored as part of a study by the US Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Alaska law prohibits the killing of nursing black bears. The men will now have to pay fines of $1,800 each, and Mr. Renner faces three months in jail plus the removal of his hunting privileges and forfeiture of hunting equipment.
