After flying “around the world a couple of times” just before the first presidential debate last week, Joe Biden said he “nearly fell asleep” and attributed his lacklustre performance on jet lag, reports Sky.
The eighty-one-year-old US president claimed he “wasn’t very smart” for travelling widely in the weeks before the Atlanta event, when he fared so badly that both allies and opponents urged him to withdraw from the presidential contest.
At a Virginia campaign rally on Tuesday, Mr. Biden said to supporters, “I decided to travel around the world a couple of times, going through about 100 time zones.”
He went on, saying he “came back and nearly fell asleep on stage” and “didn’t listen” to his crew.
“That’s no excuse but it is an explanation,” he added while admitting: “I didn’t have my best night,” reports Sky.
It was unclear at first if Biden was kidding because the Biden campaign forbids media organisations from filming fundraisers, according to NBC, Sky News’ US partner.
During two separate journeys over the course of two weeks last month, the president travelled to France and Italy. On June 15, he flew overnight from the G7 meeting in Bari to Los Angeles to speak at a fundraiser with former president Barack Obama before returning to Washington the next day, reports Sky.
But after that, he spent six days at Camp David getting ready for Thursday’s battle with Donald Trump, the front-runner for the Republican nomination.
However, the Democratic contender showed no signs of preparation as he faltered and hesitated his way through a taxing television debate, a performance that was deemed a “complete disaster,” reports Sky.
