Protesters have demanded that nightclubs be let to remain open later due to worries that a significant number of nightclubs may close, reports RTE.
The proposal was made by the Give Us The Night group at a Leinster House meeting with senators and TDs.
The government should implement revised licencing legislation for nightclub and nighttime venue operating hours, according to Give Us The Night spokesman and musician Sunil Sharpe, who spoke at the meeting that was attended by a number of MPs from across the political spectrum.
Mr. Sharpe stated that although participants in the nighttime economy were informed four years ago that licencing regulations will be updated as part of the Programme for Government, he believes this has not occurred, reports RTE.
According to Mr. Sharpe, since “many nightclubs are teetering on the edge of closure,” nightclubs should be permitted to operate later and have staggered closing times.
According to him, his campaign group is pushing for the government to pass the Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2024, waive the fees associated with special exemption orders for late-night establishments, and raise the annual Night-Time Economy Budget to €10 million for the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, reports RTE.
